How to Wear Your Graduation Cap

The graduation cap is an important part of your graduation ceremony attire and it’s known professionally as a mortarboard.

It’s typically worn flat on the head while the sides are tipped parallel to the ground.

It’s important to wear it in a certain way in keeping with centuries-long tradition and of course, to make sure that it doesn’t fall off.

Here’s how to ensure that your graduation cap is nice and snug.

Do Some Practice

As with anything, practice makes perfect so try putting on your graduation cap a couple of times before the big day to make sure that you know how to put it on and that it fits properly.

You want to ensure that it’s nice and snug enough to stay on throughout the entire ceremony.

You should also be able to put it on without looking into a mirror because you won’t have one in the ceremony if something happens to it.

Choose a Hairstyle

For ladies, it’s important to make sure that you go with a hairstyle that’s suited to wearing a mortarboard.

This means avoiding ponytails or high up-dos because they will interfere with your ability to wear your graduation cap. The guys have it much easier because they already either have short hair or no hair at all.

The good news is that there are plenty of short, mid-length, and long-hairstyles that ladies can try out that are stylish and suitable for the occasion.

Put the Cap Properly

The right way to put on a graduation cap is to point the pointy side of it towards the front while the elastic band remains facing backward.

It’s important to avoid titling the hat backward and it should always be kept at least 1 inch above the eyebrows.

Your graduation cap should come with instructions on how to wear it on the inside so flip it over and see if the manufacturer left you some clues.

Secure It on Your Head

With all the excitement and activity going on during graduation, it’s easy to feel as if your graduation cap is going to be too flimsy to keep up with everything.

However, when secured properly, graduation caps tend to fit snugly and aren’t likely to fall off under any circumstances.

You could always take extra precaution if you like by securing it with some bobby pins or hair clips that match your hair color so as to be indistinguishable.

Attach a Tassel

One of the most popular cap decoration ideas is to attach a tassel onto the cap. It’s important to brush the tassel to ensure that it doesn’t get tangled.

Thereafter, attach the tassel on the center top button of the cap and tug it to make sure that it’s securely in place.

The graduation ceremony is an important ritual and event that marks the end of your academic career and the beginning of your work career.

Make sure it goes smoothly by wearing your graduation cap properly and ensure that it stays nice and snug throughout the proceedings.
