How to Create a Google Classroom Assignment From Drive

Like all things technology, Google changed up Google Classroom this past year. One of the things that changed was how to create and assign an assignment. If you’re new to Google Classroom, then you won’t know the difference! So, let’s get started on how to create and assign a Google Classroom assignment using files from your Drive!

1. Open the classroom you want to create an assignment for.

2. Click the create button.

3. Click Assignment

4. Give your assignment a title.

5. Click the Drive icon.

6. Locate the file you want to assign.

If you recently placed the file you want to assign in your Drive, you might see it show up in the first window. If you don’t see the file that you want to assign in the window, you will need to click “My Drive” and locate the file. Once you have located the file, click it then click add.

7.  Determine what students you want to assign it to.

Google Classroom allows you to decide which students you want to assign a task to.  This option is great for differentiation!  You can assign to All Students, or you can assign it to specific students.

8.  Determine points, due date, and what topic you want to assign it to.

These are completely optional, and in my 3rd-grade classroom, I leave them blank most of the time.

9.  ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT!

Before you assign, you MUST choose this option if you want the file to be interactive for each student and you don’t want your original to changed.  You MUST  choose “MAKE A COPY FOR EACH STUDENT”.

10.  Click Assign

That’s it!  Yes, it seems like a lot of steps, but once you have a few under your belt, it gets easier.

If you want to download a “Cheat Sheet” you can do that below.  Copy it front and back, store it in a page protector, and have an instant reference for creating an assignment in Google Classroom from Drive.
